Abstract
Poets often reference or allude to earlier or contemporary poets for various reasons. Alongside the diverse historical benefits, these references can sometimes assist in unraveling semantic and corrective knots. Such mentions and allusions have been more prevalent among court poets and primarily reflect poetic rivalries and challenges. Since Ferdowsi was not a court poet and the genre of the Shahnameh is narrative, one cannot find many striking examples of these references within his work. Apart from Daqiqi, who was a precursor to Ferdowsi in composing the Shahnameh of Abu Mansuri, Ferdowsi only once mentions Rudaki in relation to the versification of Kalila and Dimna. Alongside this mention, it is possible to suggest a reference that has thus far been overlooked. The reign of Hormozd Nowshin-Ravan in the Shahnameh features an eloquent speech characterized by a sarcastic and ambiguous language. A couplet from this speech may evoke the opening of the poem "Juy-e Moulian" and carries an implication related to Rudaki's harp playing. This issue has influenced the writings of Ferdowsi in the manuscripts of the Shahnameh and has also cast doubt on the choices of editors regarding the readings of "bād" "būy" and "yād" In this article, we aim to critique previous reports concerning this section of the Shahnameh by reflecting on the meaning and the ambiguous context of King Hormozd Nowshin-Ravan's speech. Then, alongside providing a potential reference from Ferdowsi to the opening of the poem "Juy-e Moulian,"
