Al-Yamini, authored by Abu al-Nasr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Jabbar Utbi (d. 427 AH), is among the key sources for understanding the history of the period during Ferdowsi’s life, as well as the eras of the Samanids, Ziyarids, Buyids, and Ghaznavids. Although the author occasionally indulges in excessive praise of Mahmud of Ghazni, the historical value and the insightful content of this text cannot be overlooked. The early Persian translation of this work, done by Abu al-Sharaf Nasih ibn Zafar Jurfadeqani, is one of the finest examples of refined Persian prose. The translator has followed the style exemplified in Kalila wa Dimna with great skill. Just as the original al-Yamini stands as a prominent historical work, its translation can be considered a paragon of Persian prose. Jurfadeqani also contributed historical information about the later Saljuq period in Iraq in the introduction and conclusion of the book. Fortunately, numerous manuscripts of Al-Yamini and its translations and commentaries have survived, aiding scholars in reconstructing the original translation. The present article presents an introduction and analysis of over twenty distinguished and early manuscripts of the Persian translation of Yamini by Jurfadeqani. It also evaluates the deficiencies in the previous edition and, through comparison with the newer edition, argues for the necessity of a revised edition. Additionally, it discusses the superiority of the readings in the newer edition compared to the earlier one.
