From the viewpoint of semiotics, every literary text and every field of human culture is a system of symbols, indicating meanings and areas beyond their lexical meaning. Similarly, Sofis’ table and the type, shape and size of food contain a number of symbols. Since fasting, hunger and avoiding gluttony are the chief pillars of Sufism, the spectrum of foods and drinks have semiotic value. For this reason, researching the food culture of Sofia and the semiotics of food in their table is a gateway to understanding and analyzing the world of Sufism. Such research demonstrates that, despite the fundamental importance of fasting and abstaining from food in Sufism, didactic literature, compared to other literary genres, is very rich and remarkable in terms of type, frequency and dealing with different types of foods and drinks, as well as the lavishness of the table. Undoubtedly, the main reason can be the pragmatism of Sufi's educational treatises and their attention to the daily life of the common people.

Furthermore, in Sofia's table, foods, sweets and drinks are placed in a hierarchical table in the exact reverse order of the general value hierarchy, causing foods to enter the realm of spirituality, hence acquiring a symbolic and allusive value. It is crucial to address this aspect because food and drink are valued based on their materials. Explicitly, taste is also considered in such table.
