One of the fundamental techniques in analyzing literary texts—one that has a significant impact on storytelling style, content structure, and the effectiveness of conveying meaning to the audience—is dialogue. In classical mystical texts as well, dialogue is considered one of the prominent elements in the study of narratives. The examination of mystical works shows that, in addition to enhancing the attractiveness of stories and stimulating the reader’s curiosity, dialogue can also be analyzed from various narrative and thematic perspectives. In the book One Thousand Tales of the Sufis, the narrator, in many instances, presents elevated ideas and the liminal situations of mystics through dialogue and question-and-answer exchanges between characters. The present article seeks to answer the following questions: In One Thousand Tales of the Sufis, what functions and capacities does dialogue have in the narrative style of the stories and in the explanation of mystical-philosophical issues? And can an overall understanding and dominant classification—such as types of character archetypes and prevailing plot patterns—be achieved through examining the narrative functions of dialogues? According to this study, the most important narrative functions of dialogue in One Thousand Tales of the Sufis include: action-oriented dialogue segments, complication (conflict development), suspense and resolution, allusive and metaphorical dialogues, cross-dialogues and the convergence of viewpoints, chronological order (calendar time) within narrative dialogues, character typology and character-developing dialogues, as well as plot expansion and plot-developing dialogues. Furthermore, by examining the behavioral patterns of characters and the narrative structure of dialogues.
