One of the well-known ghazals of Hafez begins with the following verse:
One cannot reach those curling locks of yours / Nor can one rely on your promise or on the morning breeze.
The second verse reads:
I will make every effort in seeking you / Yet the divine decree cannot be changed.
Since commentators have not offered a precise and convincing interpretation of this verse, they have attempted to account for its apparent ambiguity by referring to such notions as Hafez’s irony, mockery, and his display of indifference toward the beloved. Most commentators have argued that Hafez means that he will strive to attain union with the beloved; however, because fate cannot be changed, his efforts will necessarily remain limited and ultimately prove futile. Despite these attempts, the existing interpretations do not appear to provide a satisfactory explanation capable of resolving the ambiguity of the verse.
A careful consideration of the concepts of qazā and qadar, particularly the subtle distinction between them, can contribute to a more precise understanding of the verse. In Islamic theological discourse, qazā refers to the irrevocable divine decree, whereas qadar concerns the sphere of human agency and choice. The present study critically examines the interpretations offered by commentators, identifies their shortcomings, and, through an analysis of the precise meanings of qazā and qadar, proposes a new interpretation of the verse.
